Here's the fact that confuses almost everyone who reads their dishwasher manual properly: the Eco cycle takes nearly four hours and uses less energy than the one-hour cycle.
That sounds like nonsense. Longer should mean more. It doesn't, and understanding why explains most of what the cycle buttons are actually doing.
Heating water is the whole story
A dishwasher spends the overwhelming majority of its electricity on one job: heating water. The motor that sprays it around draws very little by comparison, and running that motor for three extra hours costs almost nothing.
So how does a cycle get cheaper? Two ways only. Heat less water, or heat it less hot.
Eco does the second. It runs at a lower temperature, somewhere around 50 C rather than the 65 to 70 C an intensive programme reaches, and compensates with time. Detergent enzymes need contact time to break down food residue, and given three or four hours at a modest temperature they do the same work that heat does in ninety minutes.
Quick cycles invert that trade. They have no time, so they use heat and volume instead. An hour-long programme typically consumes more energy and often more water than the four-hour one. If you're running Quick because it feels more efficient, you've got it exactly backwards.
The cycles, and what each is really for
Eco is the default for a normal load, and it should be what you run most days. Slower, cooler, cheapest. The catch is genuine: on heavily baked-on residue it underperforms, because the enzymes never get the temperature they'd need.
Auto uses a turbidity sensor, which measures how cloudy the water is during the first rinse and adjusts temperature and duration accordingly. On paper it's the clever option. In practice it's a reasonable compromise for mixed loads where you honestly don't know how dirty things are, and it usually lands somewhere between Eco and Intensive on both time and cost.
Intensive runs hot, around 65 to 70 C, for pots, roasting tins and anything with cooked-on protein or starch. It's expensive to run and hard on delicate items. Use it when you need it and not out of habit.
Glass or Delicate runs cool, roughly 40 to 45 C. Its purpose is protecting glassware from the thermal shock and the etching that repeated hot cycles cause. Worth using if you own glasses you'd be annoyed to cloud.
Quick or Speed exists for one situation: you need these plates in an hour and they're only lightly used. It's not an efficiency setting and treating it as one costs money.
Rinse or Pre-wash uses cold water and no detergent. It stops a half-full machine developing a smell over two days. It cleans nothing.
Does the half load button help?
Less than it sounds like it should, and this is one of those features that survives on intuition rather than evidence.
A half load option typically reduces water and energy by considerably less than half, because the machine still has to heat a working volume and run a full cycle structure. Manufacturers' own figures often put the saving closer to twenty or twenty five percent.
The genuinely efficient move is to run a full machine on Eco. If that means waiting a day, run a cold rinse in between and wait. A full Eco cycle beats two half loads on any measure you care about.
Why the energy label only describes one cycle
This trips up people comparing models, and it's worth knowing before you spend nine hundred pounds on a rating.
The EU energy label figure is measured on the Eco cycle specifically. Not Auto, not Intensive, and not an average of everything the machine offers. A dishwasher rated A on its label is rated A when run on Eco with a full load.
So the rating tells you about the machine, but it only predicts your bill if Eco is what you actually run. A household that lives on Auto and Intensive will use meaningfully more than the label suggests, and that gap isn't the manufacturer being dishonest. It's the test standard doing exactly what it says.
How much water are we actually talking about? Modern machines use roughly 9 to 12 litres on an Eco cycle. A machine from fifteen years ago used 15 to 20. Washing the same load by hand under a running tap uses far more than either, which is the part people find hardest to believe.
What the smart features add here
This is where connectivity earns its place, and it isn't the remote start button.
The useful feature is consumption reporting. An app that tells you what each cycle actually drew, in kilowatt hours and litres, turns the guesswork above into your own numbers. Once you can see that your habitual Auto cycle costs half again what Eco does, the behaviour tends to change on its own.
The second useful one is delay start tied to a tariff. If you're on a time-of-use plan, running a four-hour Eco cycle overnight on the cheap rate is the single largest saving available on this appliance, and it's larger than the difference between any two cycles. Load it after dinner, set it to finish by breakfast.
Notifications matter more than they sound too, for a reason that has nothing to do with convenience. Dishes left sitting in a warm, damp machine for six hours develop a smell, and that smell is what makes people start running an extra rinse cycle, which undoes the saving entirely. A ping when it finishes keeps you unloading it promptly.

The habits that matter more than the cycle
- Don't pre-rinse. Scrape the plates and put them in. Modern detergents contain enzymes that need food residue to work against, and a spotless plate going in can genuinely come out worse. Pre-rinsing also wastes more water than the machine uses.
- Load the bottom rack facing the centre. The spray arm works outward from the middle, so plates angled inward catch the water.
- Keep the filter clean. A blocked filter recirculates dirty water and people blame the cycle. Check it monthly, it takes two minutes.
- Use rinse aid in hard water areas. It's the difference between dry dishes and spotted ones, and it costs pennies per cycle.
- Don't overload the top rack. Anything blocking the upper spray arm leaves a shadow of unwashed items behind it.
So which one should you actually press?
Eco, most of the time. That's the honest answer, and it's mildly annoying because it's the slowest button on the panel.
Intensive when you've cooked something that baked onto a tin. Glass when you're washing glassware you care about. Auto when the load is genuinely mixed and you can't be bothered deciding. Quick only when time is the constraint, and knowing you're paying for it.
