TL;DR - The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is still the strongest on paper for pets, but it is an older model with a successor, and UK prices swing from about 1,299 to 1,455 GBP. The Dreame L20 Ultra is the value pick at about 599 GBP. Both use rubber brushes. iRobot is under new ownership, which matters for the Roomba.

Updated October 2026: Prices and specs were re-checked against retailer pages and published reviews. Removed because nobody here could source them: the claim that this page's author owns and tests the Roborock, the dock capacity "7 weeks", an AIVI 3D and ZeroTangle claim for the Ecovacs, and the price-tier table. The Roomba's suction is now shown as unpublished, and iRobot's change of ownership is noted.
Why do pet owners need a different kind of robot vacuum?
Not every robot vacuum can handle pet hair. Plenty claim they can, and the marketing is all pascals and adjectives, so it pays to read the spec sheets.
Pet hair wraps around brushes. It clogs filters fast. And if your vacuum can't dodge a dog toy, you'll come home to a stuck robot beeping in the hallway.
So what separates a good pet hair robot vacuum from a bad one? Three things: suction in pascals (Pa), a brush design that resists tangling, and a self-emptying base so you aren't cleaning the vacuum more than it cleans your floors.
Four models are worth the shortlist in the UK right now. Here is how they separate.
Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, strongest on paper for pet hair
Price: about 1,299 GBP at Amazon UK and 1,455 GBP at Sotel in the listings I found. The UK launch list price was 1,725 GBP, so it has fallen a lot.
Key specs: 10,000 Pa suction, DuoRoller rubber brush, LDS laser navigation with obstacle avoidance, a dock that washes and dries the mop pads and empties the bin, 270 ml bin.
The 10,000 Pa figure is the highest on this list, and the rubber DuoRoller is the reason it's on a pet-hair list: it's built to resist wrapping, unlike a bristle brush. Roborock's VibraRise 3.0 mop lifts 20 mm when it detects carpet, which keeps a wet pad off the rug.
One thing to know before you buy: this is a 2023 model, and Roborock's own store in Australia lists it as discontinued. Its successor line is the S9 MaxV Ultra, which Roborock sells as the Saros 10. If you can find the S8 at a discount it's still strong. If not, price the newer one too.
iRobot Roomba j9+, best for carpeted homes
The Roomba j9+ has Carpet Boost, which raises suction when it detects carpet. For mostly-carpeted homes that matters.
Price: roughly 580 to 690 GBP for the j9 and j9+ at UK retailers I found. The Combo j9+ with mopping is listed from about 800 to 1,250 GBP.
Key specs: rubber dual multi-surface extractors, three suction levels with Carpet Boost, Clean Base that empties debris for up to 60 days (iRobot).
iRobot doesn't publish a pascal figure for the j9. Third-party tables list about 5,000 Pa, and iRobot says "100% more suction" than its older i-series. So don't compare it to the Roborock on pascals. The dual rubber extractors are the pet-owner feature: they flex to pull hair off carpet without winding up as easily.
A word on ownership. iRobot filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025, and on January 23, 2026 it completed a court-supervised transaction with its manufacturer Picea, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Roombas are still on sale, but app and support continuity is a real question for a robot that depends on a cloud service. Check the warranty terms.
Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni, best hybrid vacuum and mop
If you want mopping and vacuuming from one machine, the Deebot X2 Omni is the pick of the older models here. Its D-shape design gets into corners better than round robots, which is where pet hair collects.
Price: Ecovacs' UK list price is 1,299 GBP, Amazon UK showed 1,318.80 GBP, and discounted or refurbished units appear for far less. Check the condition and warranty before you trust a very low listing.
Key specs: 8,000 Pa suction, dual laser LiDAR navigation, rotating dual mops that lift 15 mm on carpet, auto-empty and a mop-washing dock.
I couldn't confirm Ecovacs' tangle claims for this model, so check reviews for hair-wrap before you buy. The mopping is the real draw. The pads rotate and lift off carpet, which helps with muddy paw prints on hard floors, and the dock washes the pads so they don't go musty.
Dreame L20 Ultra, best value self-emptying option
The Dreame L20 Ultra undercuts the competition on price while matching most of the headline specs. Budget-conscious pet owners should start here.
Price: about 599 GBP at Amazon UK. Its lowest recorded price was 339 GBP in March 2026, so watch for sales.
Key specs: 7,000 Pa suction, MopExtend, which swings a pad out for edge coverage, pads that lift 10.5 mm on carpet, a dock with a 3.2-litre dust bag that also washes and dries the pads, 6,400 mAh battery and up to 180 minutes of runtime.
At 7,000 Pa it should cope with pet hair on hard floors and medium carpet, though I'd check the brush on reviews of long-haired breeds. Would I pick it over the Roborock? Only if the price gap matters, and at the prices above it does for most people.

What should you actually look for when buying?
Don't get distracted by app features and voice assistant support. Here's what matters for any pet owner.
Strong suction (4000 Pa as a floor, 6000+ for carpet). It's the biggest single factor in lifting hair from carpet, but it's a rough guide. Brands measure pascals differently and iRobot doesn't publish one at all.
Brush design. Rubber extractors beat bristle brushes for hair. Bristles tangle in days in homes with pets. Rubber designs resist wrapping and are easier to clear.
A self-emptying base. With pets the onboard bin fills in a run or two. Without auto-empty you're emptying it daily, which defeats the point.
HEPA filters. If anyone has allergies, a HEPA filter for trapping dander is worth having. It cleans what the vacuum picks up, though, not the room's air, and sizing a room purifier is a separate job covered in air purifier sizing by CADR.
One more thing to check, and the one nobody mentions in product listings: whether the robot works without the manufacturer's cloud. Every model above talks to a server somewhere, which means an app outage or a discontinued service can turn a 900-pound robot into a dumb one. iRobot's year is a live example. Some brands expose a local API, some don't, and the difference only shows up after you've bought it. There's a rundown of which vacuums run locally that maps model by model. If you already run any kind of home automation, check that list first, it narrows the shortlist fast.
Is the flagship worth it?
Past roughly 800 GBP you're paying for convenience more than cleaning. The Roborock pulls up more embedded fur on paper than the Dreame, but the gap you'd feel day to day is the dock, the mop-washing and the obstacle avoidance, not raw suction. Hard floors and one cat? A flagship is money wasted. Carpet, two dogs and no patience for maintenance? It could pay for itself in saved hassle. I'd take the Dreame first, and only spend more if the specific features justify it.
How do these compare to Roomba and Dyson?
The Roomba j9+ is the model most pet owners default to. It's the better fit if your home is mostly carpet, since the dual rubber rollers are built for low-pile carpet, while the Roborock's published suction and laser mapping give it the edge on mixed floors. The Dyson 360 Vis Nav is the other premium option, but it doesn't self-empty, which is a real drawback in homes with pets where the onboard bin fills quickly.
The bottom line
For most UK pet owners, the Dreame L20 Ultra at about 599 GBP is the sensible pick, and the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the one to buy if you find it discounted and want maximum suction.
Mostly hard floors and an even smaller budget? Our PURON PR12 Pro review covers a self-emptying option, though it's been retired at some Polish retailers and its 4000 Pa is only the top mode, so it's weaker for heavy shedders on carpet.
Whatever you pick, make sure it's got rubber brushes. Your floors, and your sanity, will thank you.
